The Dawning Lights of Certitude

On the Secrets of the Commander of the Faithful

Al-Ḥāfeẓ Rajab al-Bursī

Translated by Hadeer Allam

Some books describe the world; a few try to read it. The Dawning Lights of Certitude is one of the few — a visionary masterwork of Shīʿī gnosis that reads creation out of the letters of the Arabic alphabet, and sets ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) at its axis.

Written in early-fifteenth-century Ḥilla by al-Ḥāfiẓ Rajab al-Barsī — jurist, traditionist, and master of the science of letters — it has drawn and scandalized readers for six hundred years. Composed as a defense, at the risk of its author’s name, it now reaches English readers complete, with an introduction, a glossary, and a guide to its fourteen parts.

Here the alif is the first created light and the point beneath the bāʾ the secret of origination; the Greatest Name lies hidden in the opening sūra; and the Commander of the Faithful speaks in sermons of cosmic grandeur. Through it all runs one claim — that the letters, the Names, the cosmos, and the Imams are a single unveiling of the One.

Maximalist yet self-aware, it guards its own edge, recording the Imams’ own disavowal of those who would make them lords. It asks not for assent but for attention — look where it points, and see what dawns.

A luminous, long-contested classic of Islamic gnosis, gathered and framed for the English reader at last.
